These are just some examples of the fantastic work created by artists taking part in our workshops, including brightly glazed ceramic plaques and bold self-portraits painted in acrylic on coloured card.
Access Arts has also run a series of workshops with clients from Compaid, exploring a range of materials and processes. Participants created individual ceramic pieces alongside colourful painted-paper collages, with an emphasis on experimentation, personal expression and developing their own ideas.

Influenced by a book on primitive masks, the artist created this bold, expressive line drawing. Its simplified forms and strong black outlines give the work a graphic quality that would translate particularly well into textile design.

This bold and playful portrait explores colour, character and expression with a wonderful sense of freedom. Painted directly onto orange-coloured card, areas of the original surface have been left visible, allowing the orange to become part of the image and creating a rich, layered painterly effect.

A playful ceramic plaque designed on tracing paper and transferred to clay before being sculpted in relief. The piece has glass laid into the sunken relief as well as ceramic glaze on the bossed areas and the background.

This highly personal ceramic plaque was inspired by a treasured photograph of the artist’s late mother, pictured holding a playful “I’ve been naughty” sign. Recreating the image in clay, the artist has transformed a special memory into a colourful and tactile keepsake. Beautifully glazed and full of character, the piece is an inspiring example of how art can provide a meaningful way to celebrate, explore and share personal stories
This beautifully conceived ceramic car is a playful interpretation of a familiar everyday object. The form was created by laying rolled clay over a cardboard maquette, providing a simple structure around which the car could take shape. Cut-out shapes and raised relief details bring texture and interest to the surface, while the car’s wonderfully direct, hand-modelled quality gives it a distinctive charm.

This drawing with bodybuilding as its subject depicts a figure lifting an enormous barbell beneath a bright yellow sun. The exaggerated scale of the weights and unusual proportions give the image a sense of humour and the block colour creates a strong composition. There is something particularly engaging about the small figure taking on such an outsized challenge.

By the same artist “CAKE!!!!” leaves no doubt about the subject. The uneven shapes, strong outlines and emphatic lettering give the work a directness and humour that make it immediately engaging.
